Who is South Hook LNG Qatar
Petroleum was established in
1974 as a national corporation completely owned by the State of Qatar.
Qatar Petroleum is responsible for all oil and gas industry processes in
Qatar. Qatar is an independent state of some 0.8 million inhabitants situated on the southern shore of the Arabian Gulf. It gained its independence from the UK in 1971. It covers an area of some 11.4 thousand square kilometers. The LNG planned to be shipped to South Hook will come from a reservoir called the North Field which is located off the coast of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf. This is the largest discovered gas field in the world. To give some idea of its size, the currently estimated proven reserves would meet existing UK natural gas demand for almost 250 years. |
![]() ![]() ![]() US-based Marathon Oil, who already have licences in the North Sea and off the Irish coast, plan to start drilling off Pembrokeshire during October 2005. The planned £12 million project will be the first commercial drilling off Wales for 11 years. The company is looking to reappraise the Dragon Field, off Milford Haven, which was last drilled in 1994. Increasing energy prices over the last 10 years have now made the natural gas field attractive for further exploration. Milford Haven is set to become central to the UK energy industry, with the construction of a new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import terminal and the expected introduction of gas-fired power stations in Pembrokeshire. This is encouraging companies such as Marathon to reassess the area's potential. Concern has already been expressed by environmental pressure groups regarding the effect of gas extraction on wildlife in the Irish Sea. |
